Quilts As Art: A History

Lecture with Robert Shaw
Quilts As Art: A History

Contrary to popular belief, the earliest European and American quilts were not made from scraps but from expensive materials, and were special pieces intended for use by guests or as gifts that memorialized significant occasions. Based on his critically acclaimed book, American Quilts: The Democratic Art, independent scholar and curator Robert Shaw will present a history of such textiles and provide a context for the contemporary artist-made quilts in the exhibition.
